First Impressions

The Multicom Pro is a solid, professional radio that comes complete with carry strap, belt clip, drop in charger, and rechargeable battery pack. The radio is very well built and should take a few knocks without damage.

For the purpose of this review I used 4 X AA Alkaline batteries as I just couldn't wait to try it out. (The supplied battery pack requires a 12 hour initial charge)

The controls are very easy to use and it is great to see a rotary on/off/volume control on the top of the radio - Something that few radios seem to have these days. The volume can therefore be set to exactly the desired level. The PTT button is on the left hand side with a Function/Monitor button below. There are four buttons on the front of the radio which control all of the radios features.

The LCD is large and easy to see with a bright backlight for low light environments.

Features

Channel Scan: The channel scan is operated by simply pressing the function button together with the scan button. The radio scans through the 8 channels until a signal is found.

Memories: Each channel can be programmed with up to 5 different memory settings for CTCSS/DCS.

Monitor: The monitor feature is selected by pressing and holding the monitor button. The squelch is opened so even the weakest of signals can be heard.

Time Out Timer: When activated the radio will stop transmitting after a continuous period of 2 minutes, thus saving battery power and preventing accidental transmissions such as when the radio is in your pocket.

Voice Scrambling: This radio can operate using simple voice inversion to give you a degree of privacy. Only users of radios equipped with the same function will be able to hear what you are saying. Very useful for business operators.

Key Lock: When activated all keys other than the Press To Talk are disabled on the radio.

VOX: This radio can be operated hands free by selecting the VOX function. The VOX sensitivity can also be changed with TEN different settings !

CTCSS/DCS: The addition of the DCS (Digital Coded Squelch) along with the standard CTCSS gives a huge variety of operating modes thus ensuring the maximum prevention of interference from other users. (Over 900 channel combinations !)

Splash Proof/Shock Resistant: This radio is made to last and should be able to cope with all weather conditions and activities.

Drop In Charger & Battery Pack: Comes as standard with the radio. Essential if the radio is to be used on a regular basis.

Battery Indicator: A clear representation of the current battery condition. When it starts flashing you know it's time for a re-charge !

Battery Life

The battery life is exceptional due to the use of either 4 x AA cells or the supplied rechargeable battery pack. (Most radios use either 3 x AA or worse, 4 x AAA batteries)

Accessories(LINK)

A huge range of accessories is available for this radio including: Rapid charger, NiMh battery packs, Carry cases, Cigar lighter jack lead, Extension speaker/microphone, Ear microphones, Helmet microphones.

Performance Test

I switched the radio on and was immediately greeted by a station calling on channel 5 (Our local chat channel). It turned out to be Graham (Using an Entel Eurowave), who was located in Cramlington, a town about 2 miles from my location. His signal sounded crystal clear through the Multicom's internal speaker. I gave him a shout and he came straight back.

He reported that my transmission was "Blasting In", (His words !) and having previously struggled somewhat to hear me on my Goodman's Tracker wanted to know what I was using. I explained that I was testing out a new radio and he commented that it sounded great with loud, clear audio. It should be noted that I was on the ground floor of my house and Graham was located in a bedroom at his house. (Reception remained loud and clear as I moved around the house)

I also listened in on the local college as they used their PMR's to keep in touch from one department to another. Their signals remained clear and unbroken as they moved around the large 3 floor building (The reception on my Goodman's Tracker and Telcom TE200 usually breaks up as they move from room to room).

Several other contacts were made (Including shop security at a local shopping centre !), and all users gave the Multicom a good report. The best contact being approximately 5 miles. I briefly tested mobile operation and found "Flutter" to be minimal with no serious breakup over a range of 2 miles.

Conclusion

The Multicom Pro is a solid, top class radio with a performance that easily exceeds the expectations of most users. It is aimed at the professional/business market and I can see why so many businesses choose this radio for their communications needs.

I expect to make good DX contacts with this radio and will attempt to do so at the earliest opportunity !

The DCS and Voice Scrambling facilities should ensure trouble free communication with a higher level of security.

Operation of the radio could not be easier and it is equally at home being used by radio novices and professionals alike - In a office block, on a building site or even on a golf course or a fishing trip - You can take this radio anywhere !

If your business needs reliable communications I believe that you'll have a hard time finding a better performing professional radio. The wide range of accessories means that you can customise the use of this radio to meet your every need.

Recommended for: Business Users (Office, Building Site, Schools, Factories, Golf Course, Fishing Club etc) and for the more professional casual user. It would also make a great "Base" radio to keep in touch with the children as they play out and about with their cheaper radios.

Many thanks to Derek Watson of Watson Hire Services who can supply this radio and many others, along with a full range of accessories.
