PMR446 DX Weekend 2003

Saturday 2nd And Sunday 3rd August 2003

My Contacts:

This year the DX weekend was more "Quantity" than "Quality". Numerous contacts with local stations were made but no sign of that elusive record breaking long distance contact !!!

My best contact was with George near Edmondbyers at a distance of 25 miles.

Here is a list and a big thank you to all the stations I spoke to:

NAME LOCATION DISTANCE(Miles)
Ken Newbiggin 5.5
Dave Ashington 5.0
Paul Ashington 5.0
Kev Mobile 5.0
Steven Mitford 8.4
Lisa and Malcolm Bedlington 3.1
George Edmondbyers 25.0
Jason Blyth 1.0
Danny and Paula Cramlington 3.0
Natasha Stakeford 4.0
Michael Whitley Bay 6.2
John Amble 15.0

Other contacts:

Paul, on holiday in Skegness, reports a contact on channel 2 with Darren who was located in Cromer some 43 miles away with nothing but open sea between them. The signal was a bit scratchy at times but a conversation was maintained for 15 minutes.

Another "Overseas" contact was reported by Dave who spoke from Lizard Point to Peter in Porthgwarra , a distance of 21 miles. Dave  was using a Motorola T6222 and Peter was using a Binatone MR600.

Richard near Harrogate said that the channels were very quiet on Saturday and no good contacts were made. Sunday, however, was a different story with "Loads of people on all 8 channels". If anything there were too many stations because as soon as contact was made another station came over the top. Richard's best contact was 15 miles.

Tropospheric Ducting

During the next few days after the DX Weekend there was tremendous lift conditions on the 2m, 70cm, and of course the PMR446 bands. Typical ! (Why not a few days earlier?)

Reports of good DX contacts came flooding in from all over the UK. Many stations reported hearing continental stations on the PMr446 channels.

My best contact was from my home location here in the North East of England to 2 stations near Amsterdam. See my report here.

Another excellent contact was reported on the PMR446 User Website Forum by Andy:

Good tropo this morning, luckily I had the morning off, so I headed up to the north coast cliffs at 7am (must be mad!). Plenty of fun on 2m and 70cm, and I scanned a very quiet 446. If anyone ever hears someone
whistling CQ in Morse on 8/08, it's me!

Then, at about 9:40am, I heard a "CQ DX" call on ch1 (no tone) - I couldn't believe it! I got straight back to Steve G7SYO who was 10 miles from Taunton Somerset. I used my trusty unmodified Vivanco on NiMH power, he had a BT Freeway. A good, but slightly scratchy contact.

I haven't had email confirmation of the exact location yet, but it could be around 216km... which would have been a record at one time - d'oh! (Sorry Andy - Delboy)

Still, it's my personal best on 446, and will probably be the first confirmed GJ-G contact.

I'll beat Delboy yet, you see if I don't... LOL

I had a quick exchange with some French kids at the weekend too - although we couldn't understand each other. It was probably only 30 miles or so, and may have been the first GJ-F contact but we'll never know!

Regards, Andy
